WolframAlpha – A New Search Engine

May 18th, 2009 | 2 Comments | Posted in News

To get attention for any search engine all you need to do is say that it will give Google a run for its money. This surely worked for WolframAlpha and most definitely they have my attention. After reading about it today, I decided to give it a try. I conducted a couple of searches which I am mentioning here.

Since I’ve been watching old Start Trek movies daily to be ready for the latest Star Trek movie, I decided to ask Wolfram the following question.

Wolfram said

Google on the other hand handled this extremely well. The first few links returned by Google give me the information I seek.

Clearly WolframAlpha does not know much about Star Trek.  Sure no problem. I’ll give it another question. An easy one this time.

As you can see above that Wolfram does not know what to do with my input. That’s two strikes. Let’s just see what Google does in this case.

Google still does a better job. And now for my third search. This is what I asked Wolfram.

So Wolfram cannot tell me where I can find best pizza in New York. Google on the other had does a fantastic job. It gives me location of pizza places at the top and also returns search results I can click on to proceed further with my research.

That’s three wins for Google and three strikes for Wolfram. My conclusion is that Google has nothing to worry about. Wolfram has got a long and I mean a long way to go before it can even make a tiny dent in search engine space.

If you had not noticed these two are completely different sort of engines.

WolframAlpha is not a common search engine, but a ‘COMPUTATIONAL knowledge engine’.

If you look at some tutorials, helps, videos etc. you will soon notice how different these two are.

Comparing them equally is like comparing rubber and glue.

Try some Wolfram like queries, like “taylor series sin x” etc

    Hi Songfugel,

If you look at any big media site you’ll find Wolfram being compared to Google. BTW: try searching for “wavelength of microwave”. Now this is scientific and computational. Yet WA does not know what to do with this.

IMO WolframAlpha is not yet ready for prime-time.
